  of the declared chemical weapons materials from Syria


The Republic of Cyprus welcomes the completion of the removal of the declared chemical weapons materials from Syria and expresses its appreciation for the work of the UN-OPCW Joint Mission, in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolution and the relevant decisions of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Executive Council. Whilst more work lies ahead and important issues still require clarification, this undoubtedly constitutes a milestone in the process of destruction of the Syrian chemical weapons programme.

Cyprus congratulates the UN and the OPCW as well as the Joint Mission, for the unwavering dedication with which they are performing their mission, which takes place under exceptionally difficult circumstances. Cyprus is particularly satisfied to have played, and to continue to play, an active role as the support base for the UN-OPCW Joint Mission to Syria, and as a facilitator to the members of the international community taking part in this endeavour, in line with Cyprus’ unwavering commitment to the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and the implementation of the UN Security Council decisions.

Cyprus’ Government proactive approach has increased the added value of the Republic of Cyprus for the promotion of conditions of peace, stability and security in the region, and accentuated its international reliability.

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus expresses the wish that the completion of the removal of the declared chemical weapons materials from Syria will contribute positively to the efforts to end the humanitarian crisis affecting the friendly Syrian people, and to assist in the creation of conditions of stability in the region.
