First meeting of the Cyprus – United Kingdom Joint Cooperation Committee





The Joint Cooperation Committee, established recently under the agreement signed between the Republic of Cyprus and the United Kingdom relating to the regulation of development in the Sovereign Base Areas, met today for the first time. The Committee was established to enable ongoing consultation and facilitate co-operation between the Republic of Cyprus and the United Kingdom to ensure the effective implementation of the agreement.



The meeting was attended by delegations from the two countries, led by Ambassador, Mr. Tasos Tzionis, and the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom in Cyprus, Mr. Matthew Kidd, respectively.

During the meeting, the Committee reviewed the provisions of the agreement and identified the areas and issues of discussion arising out of the agreement and the steps needed to be taken for its implementation. The Committee agreed to establish working groups in order to immediately begin intensive work on the various individual issues arising out of the agreement, such as the definition of planning zones and policies, issues relating to residence rights in the Bases, criminal and civil Court arrangements etc with a view to implementing the agreement in an expeditious and proper way.
