Remarks by the Government Spokesman after the meeting
 of the National Council

The two day conference of the National Council, chaired by the
President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace, was
concluded today.
Following the meeting, the Government Spokesman Mr. Nikos
Christodoulides stated to reporters that “during the two day Conference of the
National Council the parties had the opportunity to explain their concerns and
their positions with regard to the strategy and tactics, aiming to bend the
Turkish intransigence and to achieve, at the earliest possible, a solution to
the Cyprus problem that corresponds to the expectations of the people of Cyprus,
Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
During the Conference there were constructive suggestions submitted,
but there were also disagreements registered.
The President of the Republic recorded carefully the views and
concerns that were expressed by the leaders of the parliamentary parties,
repeating his commitment for the achievement of a solution that will be based on
the evolution of the Republic of Cyprus into a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation
with political equality, as this is defined in the relevant resolutions of the
Security Council, the High Level Agreements, the Agreement of 8 July and the
Joint Communique of 11 February.
The President of the Republic, out of respect for the suggestions
that were submitted, is oriented toward the creation of a subcommittee, with the
participation of the parties, for the codification of the positions and the
proposals that have been registered with the aim to assist his work for the
achievement of a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem at the earliest
possible.”
Asked whether the President will take into consideration some
positions that were presented before him with regard to the handling of the
Cyprus problem, the Spokesman said that “this is the thought of the President of
the Republic, to have a subcommittee established for the codification of the
views and suggestions that were registered. Some constructive suggestions were
submitted, but there were also disagreements; it is something that we are
obliged to tell the people of Cyprus. There was a discussion of the Cyprus
problem, an issue that concerns all the people of Cyprus and I am of the opinion
that we all have an obligation to be honest to the people of Cyprus with regard
to our positions for the achievement of the objective of a solution to the
Cyprus problem.”
