Mass Rescue Operation (Third Update)


Yesterday, at 2050 hours, the embarkation of the 345 persons in distress at the Limassol port completed successfully without any injuries.

All rescued persons were transferred by the cruise ship “SALAMIS FILOXENIA”. Upon the ship call, the competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus took all necessary measures for housing, medical care and hospitality.

During the Operation there was a constant cooperation and coordination between the JRCC Larnaca and all involved agencies of the Republic as well as the ship "MINERVA JOY" which immediately responded to the JRCC’s call and significantly assisted to the successful conclusion of Operation.

Warm gratitude is expressed to the captain and crew of the cruise ship "SALAMIS FILOXENIA" which under adverse conditions responded to JRCC’s call executing all instructions as directed and along the international regulations collected unharmed the persons in distress. His act is an example to follow.

With the excellent execution of the Operation, the Republic of Cyprus has proved that is able to deal effectively with any adverse incident which is likely to arise from marine casualties throughout its Search and Rescue Region (SRR), with immediate mobilization and full coordination of the appropriate aeronautical means.
