The President of the
Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, sent today a congratulatory message to the new
President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Mr Joseph Daul.
In his message the
President of the Republic extends his sincere congratulations on Mr Daul’s
election to the Presidency of the EPP, “the largest and most influential
political family of Europe,” and adds that “I am certain that you will follow
in the extraordinary footsteps of Wilfried Martens and demonstrate the same
leadership and commitment to promoting and fostering the close and ongoing
collaboration among the EPP members for the purpose of implementing our common
policy at the European level.”
The President of the
Republic notes that “to this end, I fully adhere to the principles on which
your Presidency will be based: unity, continuity and responsibility, and I want
to assure you that I will offer full support and any help deemed necessary
towards implementing this shared goal, in order to regain the trust of people
for a Europe which cares and provides prosperity to its people.
At the same time, I have
no doubt that you will continue devoting your efforts to attaining the full
respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law within
Europe, including Cyprus, which, unfortunately, still suffers from the ongoing
division of 1974.”
