1. Eroglu interferes to prevent an agreement in the field of football; Ertug politicizes the issue; They reject single representation
Turkish Cypriot daily Gunes newspaper (21.01.13) reports that “some interesting developments and political interferences started again” in the discussions of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA or KOP) and the so-called Turkish Cypriot Football Federation, which will pave the way for the Turkish Cypriot football players, who allegedly experience great problems in playing abroad.

The paper writes that while the spokesman of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Osman Ertug had made no statement before and after the meeting between the CFA and the Turkish Cypriot so-called federation in the government-controlled area of Cyprus, he felt the need of making a statement after the second meeting held at the headquarters of the Turkish Cypriot “federation”. Noting that this was considered as interesting by the public, the paper points out that the fact that Ertug stated clearly that he is against these discussions was commented as “beginning of the political interferences once more”.

Right after the statements by Ertug, reports Gunes, Eroglu urgently invited the chairman of the so-called football federation, Hasan Sertoglu to his office, something which was assessed as “interference by Eroglu in the football”.

According to Gunes, in statements during a visit to occupied Famagusta, Eroglu has argued that he was not against the establishment of a dialogue between CFA and the Turkish Cypriot so-called federation. “The important thing is for our friends to know what they want when they meet”, he noted adding that Sertoglu is a person who knows what he wants and “acts knowing what the views of his people and federation are”.

Noting that he trusts Sertoglu, Eroglu said that there is nothing that worries him right now in these negotiations, because the negotiations still continue. Responding to a question, he alleged: “Negotiations could be held at any time. I also meet with the Greek Cypriot side. Therefore, meeting is another thing and coming to the point of signing an agreement is something else. These meetings are important from the point of understanding the intention and the views of the opposite side. However, you cannot sit at the negotiations considering that all the wishes of the Greek Cypriot side will be accepted. You have your own views and thoughts. You will express these at the negotiating table”.

Eroglu alleged that “the Greek Cypriot federation”, as he called the CFA, is not the only way for the opening of the Turkish Cypriot football to Europe and argued that in case there is an agreement in the future “perhaps the two federations would be able to act separately”. He noted that because there is no agreement, there are some “realities in the point of exhibiting the TRNC ports” in the international field. “The reality of the TRNC should be accepted. The fact that our people are deprived of playing football is a shame for humanity”, he alleged and argued: “I hope that the organizations that are related with football will see this reality. If they accept that the Turkish Cypriot people sit with good will at the negotiations which last for years, we could come to a point of being able to play football in Europe without being recognized and without having an agreement with the south [Translator’s note: as he described the Republic of Cyprus]. The important thing is for the world to see the realities which exist in Cyprus…”

Eroglu claimed that the Turkish Cypriot side accepted all the solution proposals on the Cyprus problem and that the Greek Cypriot side rejected these proposals. “If the world sees these realities, the TRNC youth will be able to play in Europe without meeting with KOP”, he alleged.

Meanwhile, according to illegal Bayrak television (19.01.13, online), Eroglu’s representative Osman Ertug“has warned” against the ongoing negotiations between the CFA and the Turkish Cypriot so-called federation, arguing that they should becareful while continuing the discussions. Speaking at a TV program Ertug said: “It seems that the negotiations between the two federations are continuing towards an agreement, but the issue should be evaluated in a broader perspective. This is an issue beyond football”.

Referring to the statements by the president of the CFAKostakis Koutsokoumnis, who had reportedly said that this is only football and they are not dealing with politics, Ertugargued that“even these statements are politics”.

“Every country has sports policies. This policy is not contrary to its foreign policy” Ertug said and warned that it will be wrong if this agreement “brings the Turkish Cypriots under the responsibility of CFA or any other structuring, because this is contrary to the Turkish Cypriotside’s national Cyprus policy and the national sports policy.

Furthermore, according to Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (19.01.13), the chairman of the Turkish Cypriot so-called football federation, Hasan Sertoglu has stated that agreement is reached on some points with the CFA, while solutions are being searchedon some other points. In statements during a press conference on Friday, Sertoglu said that both federations will prepare a letter for their meeting in Zurich where the two letters will be merged. Afterwards the text will be submitted to their members, which should approve the agreement.

Sertoglu said that each federation will preserve its autonomy, but the international representation will be one, because FIFA recognizes only the CFA. He noted that their target is find a common point in the Cyprus football and argued that they will not enter under the umbrella of the CFA.

Finally, Turkish Cypriot daily Volkan newspaper (20.01.13) reports that in statements on the issue, Serdar Denktas, chairman of the Democratic Party (DP), has criticized the administrators of the Turkish Cypriot so-called football federation and argued that if the “federation” says that “the politicians should not interfere” and acts without Eroglu to know it, great dangers exist. He said that everybody wants the Turkish Cypriots to be able to play matches with teams members of FIFA, but this cannot happen with permission by the Greek Cypriots. He claimed that the equality of the Turkish Cypriots should not be spoilt and that the Turkish Cypriot “federation” should give the permission to the clubs to play international matches.

In his statements, the Sudanese Speaker of the Assembly expressed his satisfaction with seeing Bozer in Sudan and added that the bilateral relations between the Moslem countries should be at the highest level. He said that the Cyprus problem continues for years and alleged that only the Greek Cypriot side enjoys support and help, arguing that this was a biased and impartial aid. He claimed that there are two sides in Cyprus and referred to an “obligatory neighborliness”, like the one that exists in south and north Sudan. Arguing that the first three-year economic program has been successfully implemented and that the new program for the period 2013-15 includes “new investments in all fields and prosperity”, Atalay said that if the crisis continues, this will cause damage and not benefit. He argued that this would harm both the Cyprus problem and the investments.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, Atalay noted that as of March they predict that the issue will gain acceleration and together with Turkey’s EU accession course, Cyprus will be coming much more onto the agenda. Noting that they have a technical team which works only for the “TRNC”, Atalay said that they have carried out a “good analysis” for the government-controlled area of Cyprus. He noted that they are closely following the dimensions of the economic crisis in the government-controlled area of the island and the measures taken to get out of this crisis. He noted that he discussed the Cyprus problem last week with the Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu and evaluated the situation that will exist after March.

The result of this struggle was not a federal state, but a freed piece of homeland united to motherland Turkey. However, Turkey, as a necessity of its policy, did not do this. It gave permission for the establishment of a separate independent state as a reward of the struggle given by the Turkish Cypriot people”.

I thank you very much for all you have done until today. You have obtained a very useful result. I want you to work intensively from now on as well, because this organization will be very necessary to us in the future. We do not abandon our policy for division”.
