Statements of the Government Spokesman on the amendment of the law on voting

The Government Spokesman, Mr Christos Stylianides, speaking yesterday following the Council of Ministers, said that the Council approved the amending law on Civil Registry aiming at the amendment of the basic law so that it is possible to automatically register to the electoral list those who have a right to vote.

Mr Stylianides added that the Council of Ministers also approved the amending law on the election of MEPs, aiming at the automatic registration to the special electoral list for constituents of all the citizens of the Republic that reside in the areas of the Republic of Cyprus in which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control, who have the right to vote and hold an identity document of the Republic.

The Government Spokesman concluded by saying that it is already known that this decision has to do with the participation of Turkish Cypriots in the next European Parliament Elections and that it is an equal participation for all the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus and this bill is moving to the House of Representatives for approval.
