Information and Communication Technologies Usage in Households 2013



The Statistical Service announces the results of the annual survey ‘Information and Communication Technologies Usage in Households and by Individuals 2013’. The data were collected with personal interviews and ιt covered all the government controlled areas of the Republic of Cyprus. The reference period of the survey was the first quarter of 2013. The survey covered 1.664 households and 3.663 individuals aged 16 – 74 years old.



The main results of the survey are the following:

a) The percentage of households with access to a computer increases to 70,3% in 2013 compared to 69,7% in 2012. The percentage of households with access to a desktop computer decreased to 27,3% compared to 28,8% in 2012 while the percentage of households with access to a laptop computer remain stable to 62,0% compared to 62,4% in 2012. It is worth mentioning that 18,7% of households have access to a tablet computer.

b) A computer is found in 91,1% of households with dependent children, while in households where there are no dependent children the percentage is only 60,7%.

c) During 2013 the internet access in households continues to increase and reaches 64,7% compared to 61,8% in 2012. At the same time, an increase was observed in the individuals that used the internet, from 60,7% in 2012 to 65,5% in 2013.

d) The broadband connection has become the main type of internet connection since it is used by almost all households (99,5%). 10,5% of the households with internet access have mobile connection to the internet (via handset/ broadband card/ USB).

e) Individuals aged 16 – 24 years old (94,7%) and students (99,0%) are the more frequent internet users. This percentage decrease with age since only 16,4% of individuals aged 65 – 74 years old use the internet. Men are using the internet more frequently than women with percentage 63,3% and 60,3% respectively.

f) The most popular internet activities are finding information about goods or services, and sending/receiving e-mails (85,7% and 74,7% of internet users respectively).

g) 67,7% of internet users are participating in social networks like facebook, twitter etc.

h) 19,8 % of persons made online orders for goods and services in the first three months of 2013. More than half of them order clothes and sports goods (53,4%) and 49,8% order travel arrangements (tickets, hotel, car hire etc.).

i) Almost all the persons that used the internet, used a search engine to find information (95,2%), while 72,3% sent e-mails with attached files (documents, pictures, etc.) and 59,8% used the internet to make telephone calls.
