Written statement by the Deputy Government Spokesman Mr Victor Papadopoulos with regard to remarks by Mr Eroglu and Mr Ertug

The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, and the Greek Cypriot side will not be drawn into blame games.

The President of the Republic has repeatedly declared that he wants and is pursuing the resumption of a substantive dialogue with a prospect of successful conclusion at the earliest possible.

It is for this reason that the President of the Republic insists on reaching an agreement on a joint declaration, which will set out the basic parameters of the solution to the Cyprus problem - based on the High Level Agreements, the UN resolutions, without ignoring Cyprus’ capacity as a full member of the EU – and with respect for the acquis communautaire and the values and principles of the EU, something that will safeguard the rights of the citizens of Cyprus, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

It is toward this direction that the President of the Republic submitted a series of proposals, so that a new momentum is created in the efforts to enter into a new dialogue for the final solution to the Cyprus problem.

In spite of the obstacles raised by the Turkish Cypriot side, the President of the Republic will continue with consistency his tireless efforts for the creation of the conditions to bring about a solution that will finally terminate the anachronistic division and its painful consequences – both for the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots – which are the result of the unacceptable situation that exists in Cyprus because of the continuing occupation.
