Remarks by
the President of the Republic on his meeting
with the new
UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus
The special
interest of the Secretary General of the United Nations, who
considers that the solution of the Cyprus problem is of strategic
importance, was conveyed to the President of the Republic Mr Nicos
Anastasiades by the new UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on
Cyprus Mr Espen Barth Eide, at their first meeting today, which took
place at the Presidential Palace.
In his remarks
to reporters after the meeting, the President of the Republic said
that the meeting “was a first, very good meeting, in an excellent
atmosphere and particularly helpful.”
Asked whether
the new Special Adviser brought any message from the UN Secretary
General, President Anastasiades said that “(he conveyed to me) the
special interest of the Secretary General, who considers that the
solution of the Cyprus problem is of strategic importance.”
Asked whether
the UN official referred to any ideas that would provide a thrust to
the negotiations, the President of the Republic responded “no, no
ideas were elaborated. There was an exchange of views with regard to
our vision for the solution, and we made an extensive briefing as to
what we look for from a solution and how we see a corresponding
solution being formulated.”
