The government is implementing a coherent strategy that
combines development with the protection of the environment, the President of
the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades said today with regard to the government
policies on climate change.
Speaking tonight at the event “Earth Hour”, at the
Presidential Palace, the President said that Cyprus still maintains a unique
natural environment and the highest biodiversity in the Mediterranean and in
Europe. He emphasized that we have undertaken the obligation to preserve, to
enrich and to make even better known this natural wealth which we have
inherited.
He added that bearing in mind this obligation, the
government is implementing a coherent strategy which combines development with
the protection of the environment.
“We are designing and implementing a comprehensive
policy to address climate change and we are consistent with our international
and European obligations,” the President said. He went on to explain that the
government has implemented a comprehensive set of measures through the
introduction of the best available techniques in the industry, the
intensification of the relevant inspections and the expansion of the means of
mass transportation.
The threat of climate change hangs dangerously over our
small country, even though Cyprus itself is not one of the big polluters of the
planet, said the President, adding “and for this reason we participate actively
in the international initiatives, in order to avert the deterioration of climate
changes.”
