Remarks by the President of the Republic
after his meeting with the T/C leader
Some progress has been made in the talks for the solution of the
Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades said
yesterday evening.
In his remarks to reporters, upon his arrival at the Presidential
Palace from his meeting with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mr
Mustafa Akinci, the President said that “it was a good meeting today. There has
been some progress and that is very satisfactory.”
Invited to say whether common understandings in the talks have become
convergences, the President said “not in their entirety, but some have.”
Asked if there has been a change in Mr Akinci’s stance following the
recent political developments in the occupied areas, the President said “no, to
the contrary.”
Replying to a question about Mrs Nuland’s visit to Cyprus this week,
and to a reporter’s remark that the international community wants the
continuation of the momentum in the talks, the President said that “what we want
is not the momentum but the solution: A solution that will be acceptable, that
will meet the concerns of the Greek Cypriots and that will of course not ignore
those of the Turkish Cypriots. The point is that the concerns of the one side
should not affect the rights of the other side.”
