The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Greece and Jordan
held a meeting in Brussels
The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Greece and Jordan held a
meeting today, in Brussels, on the sidelines of the EU Foreign Affairs Council
(FAC). This was the first meeting of the three Ministers, which sought at the
establishment of an enhanced cooperation among the three countries, aiming at
creating the preconditions and the joint addressing of the challenges in the
region of the Eastern Mediterranean.
In this context, Foreign Ministers focused especially on the need for
further cooperation for the promotion of stability and security in the region of
Eastern Mediterranean. Especially, the Ministers exchanged views on the issue of
counter-terrorism and agreed on the need to enhance cooperation among the three
countries in various areas, such as the cooperation among the safety authorities
and the exchange of information.
The three Ministers also discussed energy issues, both regarding the
exploitation of hydrocarbons in the Eastern Mediterranean and the development of
renewable energy resources. During the meeting, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs
also exchanged views on the refugee crisis, and the Ministers of Cyprus and
Greece stressed particularly the need to support Jordan and Lebanon in the same
way the EU does with Turkey.
The three countries will continue their meetings in Permanent
Secretaries/Political Directors level, who will compile a specialized agenda in
relation to the fields of possible cooperation. Further meetings will follow in
ministerial level, with the potential of holding a meeting of the leaders of the
three countries in the coming time.
