Remarks by the Government Spokesman
There are specific obligations for Turkey and on which,
unfortunately, there has not been any progress, especially with regard to its
obligations related to Cyprus, the Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos
Christodoulides, said today.
In remarks to reporters at the Presidential Palace, Mr
Christodoulides when asked to comment on the Report by the European Commission
about the accession course of Turkey said that “as you know, the Report is a
text of the European Commission and it evaluates the accession course of Turkey
annually. In this phase, the Report is still being formulated at the Commission
level and is expected to be made public on 8 October.
At this stage, the only thing I can assure you of is that the Cyprus
Government throughout the year has been briefing the appropriate Commission
officials and has been making demarches about all the actions and statements of
Turkey which are not consistent or are in conflict with its obligations as a
candidate country for accession.
As you know, there are specific obligations for Turkey and on which,
unfortunately, there has not been any progress, especially with regard to its
obligations related to Cyprus. We therefore expect strict messages on this
specific issue.
The demarches and the efforts by both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and our Permanent Mission in Brussels are continuing.”
