The President
of the Republic received
the UN
Secretary General’s Special Representative in Cyprus
The
President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades received today, at
the Presidential Palace, the UN Secretary General’s Special
Representative in Cyprus,
Ms Lisa Buttenheim.
After
the meeting Ms
Buttenheim made the following statement to the Press: “It was an
excellent meeting. We had a good discussion about the process which
you know has been underway since the joint declaration was adopted in
February and I am keen as I know he is to prepare the next meeting on
the 2nd of September between him and Mr. Eroglu.
We,
in the UN, are thinking about ideas, we would like to try to help
prepare the way forward based on
an agreement between the two sides.
We also
discussed the fact that later today the mandate of UNFICYP will be
adopted by the UN Security Council, in New York. If you read that,
they also are commending the two leaders for the joint declaration
that they adopted. I think this is extremely important to bear in
mind because this is an agreement that has been reached between the
two leaders".
Replying
to a question on whether there are specific ideas to remove the
obstacles,
Ms Buttenheim said that "we are working on that. We have some
ideas and of course we meet with both sides,” adding that "we
will be sharing our thoughts".
She
also added that “the point is that they have to agree so we hope
that the meeting on the 2nd
of September will be a good meeting and on 26 August we will have the
next meeting between the negotiators Mr Mavroyiannis and Mr Ozersay
and we will be in touch with them."
Asked
when will the two sides be able to move to the next phase she said:
“I don’t have a date, I can't predict, but we obviously would
like it to be when the time is ready and I think both leaders would
like to see that moment come".
