International
trade in services
EU28
surplus up to €173 bn in 2013
United
States, Switzerland and China are the main partners
EU1
international trade in services has increased significantly in the
last decade. EU
exports of services to the rest of the world rose from €367 billion
in 2004 to €684 bn in 2013, while imports increased from €321 bn
to €511 bn. Since exports have risen more strongly than imports,
the trade surplus has almost quadrupled between 2004 and 2013, from
€45 bn to €173 bn.

* Data
for EU28 aggregates take into account confidential data. Differences
between the EU aggregate and the sum of the Member States are
primarily due to quasi transit trade. Quasi transit trade is related
to goods imported into an EU Member State from outside the EU,
cleared by customs for free circulation, and then dispatched to a
second EU Member State. In practice, branding policy may lead to the
value of goods dispatched being much higher than the value of the
goods that entered the first Member State. In order to balance the
accounts, this increase in value is recorded as an import of services
from
outside the EU, under quasi transit adjustment.
** Extra-EU28
trade for Denmark refer to extra-EU27.

c Confidential
* Data
for EU28 aggregates take into account confidential data. Differences
between the EU aggregate and the sum of the Member States are
primarily due to quasi transit trade.
In order to balance the
accounts, this increase in value is recorded as an import of services
from outside the EU, under quasi transit adjustment.
** Extra-EU28
trade for Denmark refer to extra-EU27.
