Statement by the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Yiannakis Omirou, on the Parliamentary Elections
The elections are over. The people’s verdict is respected. Unfortunately the phenomenon of abstention shows that the lack of public confidence in the political process and staff continues to constitute a serious weakness in the functioning of democracy. It is everyone’s duty to do self-criticism and more importantly, to adopt measures and policies that will restore the citizens’ trust.
The new House is called upon, through the dire conditions that the economy and society are still facing, to carry out its legislative work with social sensitivity, supporting the weak groups of the population.
It is also called upon to exercise the necessary parliamentary control with the aim of improving the efficiency of the state machine and the production of government work.
Moreover, it is called upon to preserve the powers of the House of Representatives, as these are enshrined in the Constitution.
Lastly, as regards our national issue, the House is called upon to be vigilant vis-à-vis the attainment of a democratic, viable and functional solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the Cyprus-related resolutions of the Security Council and the European acquis communautaire.
