1. Akansoy: “Eroglu nourishes the crisis on the Cyprus
problem”
Under
the above title: “Eroglu nourishes the crisis” Turkish Cypriot daily HalkinSesi
newspaper (09.01.15) reports that AsimAkansoy, “deputy” with the Republican
Turkish Party-United Forces (CTP-BG), in statements to the paper, accused
Erogluof the crisis occurred on the Cyprus problem and said that “Eroglu did
nothing to prevent the crisis to reach to this point”.
Akansoy
said that the necessary stance that Eroglu should had to show on the issue of
the crisis occurred concerning the hydrocarbon resources in the island, was to
establish an effective dialogue between Turkey and the Greek Cypriot side. “Eroglu did nothing to prevent the crisis. I
consider that Eroglu follows a policy which nourishes the crisis. The existing
crisis is nourished by Eroglu’s separatist policy and the different
alternatives he has. (…)”.
Referring
to the Cyprus problem, Akansoy said that even though he does not find it right
for the Greek Cypriot side to continue its unilateral oil exploration
activities, he opposes to the statement issued by the so-called foreign
ministry that “we will not remain unresponsive to the continuation of the
unilateral possessions of the Greek Cypriot side”. Akansoy pointed out that the decision of Turkey to send the Barbaros
Hayrettin Pasa vessel to the region again, does not serve the policy of peace.
Akansoy expressed the opinion that a right method for
this matter to be solved, could be to bring the issue to the agenda at the
negotiating table, to establish a committee that could meet the right
expectations of the Turkish Cypriots and this committee to be under the
umbrella of the UN.
Akansoy reiterated once again that the CTP party cannot
continue with its current structure and added that at the moment they will lay
aside the internal problems that exist in the party.
He, however, added that after April and the “presidential elections”, there are
a lot of things which need to be discussed.

2.Ozyigit commented on the renewal of NAVTEX; “The
Turkish side serves the non-solution”
Turkish
Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (09.01.15) reports that CemalOzyigit, chairman of the Social Democracy Party (TDP), in a
written statement yesterday, stressed the need for mutual actions to be taken
in order for the crisis occurred on the Cyprus problem to be overcome.
Evaluating
the issue of the renewal of their own NAVTEX, both Turkey and the “Greek
Cypriot leadership”, Ozyigitsupported
that with this action, the Turkish Cypriot side which recognizes this right to
Turkey, does not serve the solution but the policy of tension and the
non-solution.
Ozyigit
stressed in the statement that his party supported from the beginning that in
order for the crisis to be overcome, simultaneous actions are necessary to be
done.
Supporting the view that the withdrawal of Barbaros
Hayrettin Pasa vessel after the expire of Turkey’s NAVTEX on December 30th
2014 was an opportunity for the resumption of the Cyprus negotiation talks,
Ozyigit said that Turkey did not evaluated well this opportunity.
Commenting
on the decision of the “Greek Cypriot administration”, as he called the
Republic of Cyprus to continue its drilling activities, and the new preconditions
put forth by President NicosAnastasiades in order to return to the negotiating
table, Ozyigit said that these, gave the chance to the opportunists in the
“north” to manipulate the situation.
Ozyigit
condemned further the Republican Turkish Party-United Forces (CTP-BG) for its
stance towards this issue, supporting that during 2011 when it was an
opposition party, it was against the agreement reached with Turkey to license
Turkey’s TPAO to carry out exploration activities in favor of the “TRNC”, while
today, as Ozyigit said, it supports the renewal of NAVTEX.

3. GAE opinion poll shows that CTP and DP electorate
will not fully abide by their party’s decision as regards the “presidential
elections”
Turkish
Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi newspaper (08.01.14) publishes more results of the
“Keryneia American University’s” (GAU)
“Kyrenia Research Institute” (“GAE”) annual “Expectations Research”, according
to which the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the Democratic Party (DP)
electorate will not fully abide by their party’s decision as regards the
“presidential elections”
However,
Communal Democracy Party (TDP) and National Unity Party (UBP) voters would
wholly vote for their party candidate - TDP with 76% for Mustafa Akinci and the
UBP with 69% for DervisEroglu.
In
the event of an “election, only 50% of those who responded and are CTP voters
said that they would vote for SibelSiber
and only 19.4% of DP supporters would vote for DervisEroglu.
The
survey was conducted in December 20 with a sample of 695 persons from the five
“districts” in the occupied area of Cyprus.
4. KTOS and KTOEOS: The economic packages created destruction
Turkish
Cypriot daily Afrika (09.01.15) reports that Turkish Cypriot Teachers' Trade
Union (KTOS) and the Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers’ Trade Union
(KTOEOS) said that for years now the economic packages, which are supported and
allocated by Turkey towards the Turkish Cypriot community and are implemented
with success by their puppet “administration” and local partners, have created
a destruction.
In a joint
statement issued yesterday, the two trade unions stressed that the Turkish
Cypriot livestock breeders trade union has every right to held a demonstration,
adding that they protest against the capitalist circles and the local partners,
who think anything else than their own interests and support these economic
packages that brought their “country” to this situation.
Meanwhile,
the chairman of the “Turkish Cypriot livestock breeders trade union”
CavusKelle, in a written statement yesterday, said that the placards opened
during the demonstration had not any political meaning, they just asked
financial aid from Turkey, like all the “governments” in the occupied area of
the Republic of Cyprus ask help from Turkey to deal with their problems.
5. “Turkish Cypriot peace forces martyrs associations” calls on
Derya to apologize to them and to the Turkish army
Turkish
Cypriot daily Vatan newspaper (09.01.15) reports that the “Turkish Cypriot peace forces martyrs associations” (TBK) organized
a protest in front of the self-styled assembly against the “deputy” with the
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) DogusDerya.
According
to the paper, TBP called on Derya to apologize to the association and to the
Turkish army for her statements that the Turkish army raped in 1974 Greek
Cypriot women. The association said that those who think like Derya and some
newspaper columnists, who share her beliefs and supported her, must also
apologize.
Speaking
during the demonstration, TBP chairman Haci Isik, alleged that the Turkish
army, not only saved the Turkish Cypriots in 1974, but it saved the Greek
Cypriots as well: “We also saved the island of Cyprus. If it was not for us
coming here, neither the TRNC nor the Greek Cypriot administration would have
existed”, he claimed and added that the “peace operation” as he called the 1974
Turkish invasion to Cyprus, is a victory with nothing of its kind in history.
6. YKP and BKP to attend the EL meeting in Berlin
Turkish
Cypriot daily Afrika (09.01.15) reports that the New Cyprus Party (YKP) and the
United Cyprus Party (BKP), which are observer members of the European Left
Party (EL), will be attending the EL Executive meeting in Berlin on 9-11
January.
Murat
Kanatli- YKP’s Executive Committee Member- and SalihSonustun – BKP’s Foreign
Relations Secretary- will represent their parties in the EL meeting.
Kanatli and
Sonustu are expected to hold bilateral contacts on the sidelines of the
meetings.
7. 365 arrested for drug related crimes in 2014
According
to Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi Daily News (online, 09.01.15), the
self-styled general police directorate has released a statement regarding drug
trafficking in 2014.
The
statement said that 365 people had been arrested for having narcotic substances
in their possession. According to the statement, the police seized 5 kg of
synthetic cannabinoid, 1.5 kg of Indian hemp, 19.7 grams of cocaine, 0.144
grams of MDMA, 161 Indian hemp plants, and 621 Ecstasy and 3 LSD tablets.
8. Davutoglu unveils incentives to encourage procreation
According
to Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (online, 08.01.15), the Turkish government has unveiled a new incentive program to
encourage working women to have more children, in a bid to avoid the decline of
the Turkish population.
Under the
new plan, the government is pledging 300 Turkish Liras for a couple's first child,
400 liras for the second, and 600 liras for the third, while easing conditions
for new mothers to return to their jobs after maternity leave.
“Mothers
[working in public office] will be able to continue to be promoted in their
positions even in their unpaid leave after birth. We will also make
arrangements for part-time work for mothers. After the end of maternity leave,
mothers with one child will have the right to work part-time for two months,
mothers with two children for four months, and mothers with three or more
children for six months. They will receive full wages while working part-time,”
Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said at a press conference on Jan. 8.
The government’s new incentive program is part of President
RecepTayyipErdogan’s long-term policy of encouraging “at least three children
per family.”
“The
protection of our family life under any circumstances is of great importance
for the protection of future generations, fundamental norms, our values and
moral standards,” Davutoglu said, adding that the government’s program aimed to
bring about new measures to help working mothers.
Motherhood
and continuing a professional career are not categorically opposite things, he
also said.
Keeping
Turkey’s population young as the source of economic productivity and power is
also a strategic target, the Prime Minister said, underlining that the
government wanted to avoid problems associated with an aging population.
9. Turkey to order four more F-35 from US Lockheed Martin
According
to Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (online, 08.01.15), Turkey is planning to
buy four more F-35 Joint Strike Fighters from the U.S., in addition to the two
it had already ordered, the country's defence industry agency said.
"It
has been agreed that four more F-35 planes will be procured in addition to the
two previously ordered as part of a plan to buy a total of 100 new generation
F-35 Joint Strike Fighters," the defence industry executive committee
(SSM) said in a statement posted on its website.
The
decision came after a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu for the
first time under his rule to discuss key defence purchases.
Turkey has
long planned to purchase 100 jets to replace its ageing F-4 and F-16 fleet, but
increasing costs have hampered the acquisitions.
The defence
committee also agreed to "continue negotiations" over Turkey's plan
to buy defence missile systems.
