Remarks
by the Government Spokesman Mr
Nikos Christodoulides
It is obvious that through his statements, Turkey’s Prime Minister, Mr
Ahmet Davutoglu, is trying to create problems in the relations between Athens
and Nicosia, the Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, said today.
In his remarks to reporters, on the sidelines of a conference on “The New
Turkey, EU and Cyprus,” in Nicosia, when invited to comment on statements made
yesterday by Mr Davutoglu, the Spokesman said that “we have been briefed by the
Greek Government on what happened in Athens and it is obvious through the
statements by Mr Davutoglu, that he is trying to create a problem in the
relations of Athens and Nicosia, in particular, through his reference about a
joint monitoring committee between Greece and Turkey on the issue of
hydrocarbons.
The Republic of Cyprus is an independent state and the Republic of Cyprus
will make those decisions that best serve its strategic interests and above all
the interests of the people of Cyprus; and the Greek Government, at the request
of the Republic of Cyprus –precisely because this direct contact with Ankara
does not exist-, conveyed the views of Nicosia about the issue of hydrocarbons,
nothing more and nothing less.”
He also added that the Greek Government fully endorses the views of
Nicosia.
