Remarks
by the Government Spokesman,
Mr Nikos Christodoulides
All
those who are interested in the
Cyprus problem must request from Turkey to immediately put an end to
whatever it is doing within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the
Republic of Cyprus, the Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos
Christodoulides, said today.
In
his remarks to reporters, after the parade in Pafos on the occasion
of the national anniversary of 28
October, the Government Spokesman said that “we call on all those
who desire, can and truly want the Cyprus problem to be solved, to
turn to Ankara, so that she puts an end to its illegal actions and
thereby make it feasible for the dialogue (on the Cyprus problem) to
resume. There cannot be a dialogue if Turkey violates the sovereign
rights of a member state of the United Nations and the European
Union. It is a very clear indication that its (Turkey’s) goal is
not the solution of the Cyprus problem.
If
Turkey really means what it
publicly says about desiring the solution of the Cyprus problem, and
this is a message to everyone interested in the Cyprus problem, then
they should request from Turkey and work towards that end, to
immediately put an end to whatever it is doing within the Exclusive
Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus.”
Asked
about what our side expects from Mr. Eide, the UN Secretary General’s
Special Adviser on Cyprus, the Government
Spokesman said that “Mr. Eide will visit Ankara. We hope that he
will send the right messages to Turkey and the right message is what
I have mentioned: The dialogue cannot resume while Turkey violates
the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.”
Mr.
Christodoulides said that “nobody desires the solution of the
Cyprus problem more than us, it is our country which is under
occupation, we are the ones who want the Cyprus problem resolved more
than anyone else, but it is not feasible to be negotiating under
threats and intimidation.”
