Statement by the
Presidency of the Republic
The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos
Anastasiades, met today in Frankfurt with the President of the European Central
Bank (ECB), Mr Mario Draghi. Also present at the meeting were the Minister of
Finance, Mr Harris Georgiades, the Deputy Minister to the President, Mr
Constantinos Petrides, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Mrs
Chrystalla Yiorkatzi.
The purpose of the meeting was to review
the situation in the financial sector and its further strengthening through
policies in which the ECB can play a decisive role.
The President of the Republic explained
the policies followed and analyzed the steps that have been implemented so far
for the stabilization and reform of the financial sector, and referred to
further possible policies that will help in consolidating its trustworthiness.
On his part, Mr Draghi recognized the
important progress that has been achieved in the implementation of the program
in such a short period of time and expressed the readiness of the ECB to
cooperate with the Cypriot authorities and the Central Bank of Cyprus and to
contribute to the efforts they are making for the resolution of the remaining
problems. For this purpose, it was agreed to continue the dialogue for the implementation
of what was agreed at the meeting.
The President of the Republic expressed
his satisfaction with the meeting and its results, and said that he will
continue the efforts for the full normalization of the situation in the
financial sector.
