Statements by the President of the Republic,
Mr
Nicos Anastasiades, in Brussels
The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades,
who is in Brussels to participate in the deliberations of the informal European
Council, tonight, made the following statements before the commencement of the
European People’s Party (EPP) Summit:
“The EPP’s Summit is taking place ahead of the Summit of
the European Council, with two issues on the agenda. The first is the recent elections and
consultations that begin for the election of the President of the European
Commission and the European Council, and, second, the crisis in Ukraine and the
discussions around how to handle the whole situation, in view of the new
developments.”
To a question regarding Cyprus’ position on the issues
that will be discussed, the President of the Republic replied:
“Where the second part is concerned, and I am talking
about the crisis in Ukraine, our position has already been expressed since
March, it remains stable and, in contrast, I think it is gaining ground. Surely, I wish for the situation to
stabilize so that any new sanctions or even the thoughts for any new sanctions
are avoided. We have our own positions
on this matter as well, as well as a series of other EU member states. Where the election of the President of the
European Commission and the European Council are concerned, it will be discussed
and decided by the EPP and then, of course, by the European Council.”
Replying to a question whether he will brief his
counterparts on the developments on the Cyprus problem, he said: “As always of
course, that will happen as well”.
