- The index of the volume of retail trade measures the evolution of the turnover in retail trade, adjusted for price changes (deflated), i.e. the evolution of the total amount of goods sold, based on data adjusted for working day and seasonal effects. Seasonally adjusted euro area and EU series are calculated by aggregating the seasonally adjusted national data. Eurostat carries out the seasonal adjustment of the data for those countries that do not adjust their data for seasonal effects. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU.

weights of the Member States in the EU and euro area aggregates can

EU28 trade in
goods deficit with Japan decreased to 2.5 bn euro in 2013
Surplus
of 9.2 bn euro in trade in services
Over
the last decade, EU28
international trade in goods with Japan
is characterised by a regular fall in the share of Japan
in the
EU28's
total trade in goods, more significant for imports than for exports,
and a significant decline in the deficit. The share of imports in the
EU28
from Japan
more than halved, from 7.9% in 2002 to 3.4% in 2013, and the share of
EU28
exports to Japan
fell from 4.9% to 3.1%. In
2013, Japan
was the 7th
most important trading partner of the
EU28,
compared with 4th
in 2002.
In
2013, EU28
exports to Japan
fell
slightly compared with 2012 from 55.6 bn euro to 54.0 bn, while
imports decreased more strongly, from 64.7 bn to 56.5 bn.
Consequently, the EU28
trade deficit with Japan
also fell significantly, from 9.2 bn in 2012 to 2.5 bn in 2013.

Dutch
imports, and therefore the trade deficit, are over-estimated because
of the “Rotterdam effect”, where goods destined for the rest of
the EU arrive and are recorded in harmonised EU external trade
statistics in Dutch ports. This then has a positive effect on the
external trade balances with Japan of those Member States to which
the goods are re-exported, as these shipments would be recorded as
intra-EU trade with the Netherlands, rather than extra-EU trade with
Japan. To a lesser extent, Belgian trade figures are similarly
over-estimated.
