Remarks by the Government Spokesman on Turkey’s Note Verbale to the UN Secretary General

Remarks by the Government Spokesman on Turkey’s
Note Verbale to the UN Secretary General

The Government considers as unacceptable and condemns unequivocally Turkey’s action to send a Note Verbale to the Secretary General of the United Nations Organization with regard to the so-called agreement for the delineation of a continental shelf between Turkey and the pseudo state (the illegal, secessionist regime established by Turkey in the area of the Republic of Cyprus under military occupation by Turkey since 1974), the Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, said today.

In his remarks to reporters, at the Presidential Palace, Mr Christodoulides said:

“The Note Verbale, dated 10 April 2014, to the Secretary General of the United Nations, which a press report today refers to, concerns the submission of the geographical coordinates of what Turkey considers to be its own continental shelf and the continental shelf of the pseudo state, in the maritime area between the northern coast of the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey.

The Note Verbale refers to the so-called ‘Agreement of Delineation’ between Turkey and the pseudo state, which was ratified by Turkey through Law 6344, dated 29 June 2012. That is to say, it has to do with the so-called ‘agreement of delineation of continental shelf’ that was signed in New York between Turkey and the secessionist entity on 21 September 2011.

The ‘agreement’ does not have any legal validity in the international legal order and it is therefore legally nonexistent and invalid.

Nevertheless, it is worth noting the moment in time that Turkey has chosen to send the Note Verbale in question to the Secretary General of the United Nations.

The Government considers this action unacceptable and condemns it unequivocally. This is an action that also takes place in the midst of negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem, which, undoubtedly, are affected in a negative way.

The issue of the submission of this illegal ‘agreement’ by Turkey to the United Nations is been investigated by the Permanent Mission of the Republic in New York, and the Government is taking all the necessary actions in order to prevent the creation of new, illegal fait accomplis.
