Written statement by the Government
Spokesman,
Mr Christos Stylianides, on the tanker
“Morning Glory”
With regard to the issue of the oil
tanker “Morning Glory” and following the positive outcome of the whole matter,
the Government wishes to express its appreciation to the Government of the
United States of America for the close cooperation and coordination between the
two countries, both at a diplomatic and operational level, and which has led to
the safe transfer away from Cyprus of a potentially hazardous cargo.
It is the declared position of the
Government that Cyprus should always act within the framework of international
law and its international obligations and contribute to the establishment of
conditions of stability and security in its wider geographic area. It is within
this framework that this particular issue was handled in cooperation with the
Government of the United States, the contribution of which has been decisive
both for the security of the Republic of Cyprus and its citizens as well as for
the enforcement of international legality.
