The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, presided today over a meeting of the National Council.

Following the conclusion of the meeting, the Government Spokesman, Mr Christos Stylianides made statements to reporters, noting that “the National Council today was briefed by the President of the Republic about all the meetings of the interlocutors and their content.” He added that “the briefing included all the points on which the two interlocutors (the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot) submitted views on either side.

At the same time, the President of the Republic briefed also about the meeting of the team of interlocutor Mr Andreas Mavroyannis in Ankara, as well as about the briefing and understanding (by the Turkish Cypriot interlocutor) with Mr Mitsialis in Athens.

In addition, the President of the Republic briefed the National Council on the latest European Council meeting and the developments in Ukraine, as well as about the positions of the European Union. There was also a briefing by the President on his telephone communication with (USA Vice President) Mr Biden.”

In response to an observation by a reporter that in the occupied areas of Cyprus many statements are made on issues concerning the Cyprus problem whereas the same does not apply to the free areas, Mr Stylianides said: “There is transparency, but with level-headedness and seriousness. The Greek Cypriot side will not be negotiating publicly, because this will not be good from the national point of view. And the people, I believe steadfastly, realize that at such times, when there is a negotiation, this must be the correct procedure, the right transparency.”

He added that the President of the Republic will provide a comprehensive briefing to the people of Cyprus when he has something specific to say. “After all, we just started. We are not close to a solution of the Cyprus problem, but at the beginning of a tough negotiation,” he pointed out.
