There is an intense interest on the part of British
businessmen to become involved in the energy plans of Cyprus, the Minister of
Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr Yiorgos Lakkotrypis said today.
In his remarks to the press, the Minister, who
accompanies the President of the Republic on his visit in London, said that
during the President’s meetings “we have noted the intense interest on the part
of the British Government and companies with regard to the energy plans of
Cyprus."
He added that on the sidelines of the President’s
visit, he held a number of separate contacts, including a meeting with his
British counterpart yesterday, during which they discussed ways to cooperate
and how the British Government, which has extensive experience in the field of
energy, could assist Cyprus in this area.
He also said that the President and the Cypriot
delegation attended a dinner hosted by the UK Minister of Energy, which was
also attended by UK businessmen and “we have seen that they have an intense
interest to get involved into the energy issues of Cyprus.”
The Minister added that today he participated in a
roundtable discussion with a think tank at the Centre for European Reform and
“discussed on what has taken place so far, as well as what will take place with
regard to the planning of the Republic of Cyprus concerning the development of
its oil and gas reserves.”
