The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, presided
today over a meeting of the Council of the Leaders of political parties, at the
Presidential Palace.
In statements to the press after the meeting, the President asked
if there was any improvement with regard to reaching a joint declaration
between the two communities in Cyprus, said that “it would be good to wait and
see what the developments will be from the meetings and from the expectations
created by some with regard to the next moves by the Turks or by the Turkish
Cypriots.”
The President replied in the negative when asked whether he had a
second meeting yesterday with the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus,
Mr Alexander Downer, following their meeting yesterday morning. He also replied
in the negative when asked whether he had communicated yesterday with Mr Downer
by phone.
Invited to say whether the United Nations have put forward
anything new based on ideas and thoughts they have expressed, the President
said: “It would be good for us to wait until the afternoon to see what develops
and then there will be a full briefing.”
He added that any decision of his will definitely be made known to
the people and will be adequately explained.
Asked if he anticipates any contact with the UN within the day,
the President of the Republic replied in the negative.
