Απάντηση: I want to express optimism that it is quite possible very soon to have a text of joint declaration so that the meeting of the two leaders in the presence of Alexander Downer can take place, which will signal the official beginning of the negotiations. Of course, negotiations have been taking place since September and what the joint declaration is dealing with is a very important part of the negotiations, because we will cover a very big ground on very thorny issues, which will facilitate the negotiations from here onwards.
Ερώτηση: Μεταβήκατε στις Βρυξέλλες με τον Πρόεδρο Αναστασιάδη. Θα μπορούσατε να μας περιγράφατε λίγο τις επαφές σας εκεί; Πώς βλέπει η ΕΕ την κατάσταση στο Κυπριακό;
Απάντηση: There have been some statements by Mr Barosso which reflect the position of the European Commission encouraging the two sides to begin negotiations as soon as possible and expressing the view that a joint declaration is useful, in order to begin these negotiations. But of course with Mr Barosso and the other Commissioners we discussed the whole spectrum between Cyprus and the European Commission in other fields. For instance, when I talked, I talked about the policy of Cyprus in our region. Nothing to do with the Cyprus problem or Turkey, but more the issues of relations between Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, the responsibility of Cyprus because of its geographic position in the fight against terrorism, nuclear proliferation and so on. The Minister of Finance spoke about the economic situation in Cyprus, the progress that has been made since the program with troika was put. The Minister of Energy spoke about the hydrocarbons and also on tourism and other issues. The Minister of Labor on how we will face issues of unemployment. […]
Ερώτηση: Στο θέμα των επισκέψεων του κ. Μαυρογιάννη στην Άγκυρα και του κ. Ερτούγ στην Αθήνα ακόμα δεν κατέστη δυνατό να υπάρξει οποιοδήποτε αποτέλεσμα. Δεν άρχισαν αυτές οι επισκέψεις  και υπάρχουν αλληλοκατηγορίες ανάμεσα στις πλευρές. Ποιο είναι το πρόβλημα, γιατί δεν μπορούν να γίνουν αυτές οι επισκέψεις;
Απάντηση: Well, accusations and counter accusations became the bread and butter of us Cypriots here. The truth of the matter is that if, as I hope, the first meeting between Mr Eroglu and Mr Anastasiades will take place hopefully next week, immediately after we are going to have the visits of Mr Mavroyiannis to Ankara and Mr Ertug to Athens.
Ερώτηση: Ποιος είναι ο βαθμός βεβαιότητας ότι θα πραγματοποιηθούν αυτές οι επισκέψεις;
Απάντηση: Absolute certainty. Immediately after the meeting and the agreement on the joint declaration, the meetings of the two interlocutors respectively will take place.
Ερώτηση: Τι έχετε να πείτε για τη στάση της Τουρκίας για το θέμα της λύσης του Κυπριακού. Η κυβέρνηση του ΑΚΡ λέει ότι θέλει λύση στην Κύπρο. Πώς θα αξιολογούσατε τη στάση της;
Απάντηση: Well, I want to be cautious here in saying that there is an English say that “proof of pudding is in the eating”, which means that when we begin eating we will say whether it is good or not. So since things are expected to be developing very quickly after the joint declaration and the meeting between the two leaders, we will form opinion on this. Let me not talk about the past, let us leave our evaluations about the past aside and let us look forward and expect that will work positively in the efforts to reach a solution. […]
Απάντηση: Yes I am not tired in repeating the messages that  I would  like to send first of all to the Turkish public opinion, but also to the leadership in Ankara that everybody understands how much both Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus but also Turkey can gain from the solution of the Cyprus problem. In order to be able to achieve the solution all the stakeholders, those who are party to this problem, should work and contribute and a lot of matters will improve things with the solution. For instance, all the obstacles which exist at the moment because of the presence of the Turkish troops in Cyprus in the accession negotiations of Turkey into the EU will be removed. But also many other outstanding problems that create hindrance in exercising both the policy of Turkey towards this region and our policy towards this region will also be removed. So, if I can refer to the issue of the hydrocarbons, I have said repeatedly and I will say it again that this can serve as an incentive, as a motivation in order to resolve the problem of Cyprus […]. Let us hope that the issue of hydrocarbons may become what coal and steel at the end of the Second World War between Germany and France and this was, if you remember, the first organization on which the present EU was built. So let us hope that the hydrocarbons will become the tool for peace and reconciliation for all those who have differences in Eastern Mediterranean.
