Written statement by the Government Spokesman Mr Christos Stylianides

During a telephone conversation of the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Dervis Eroglu, in which the Turkish Cypriot leader conveyed to the President of the Republic his condolences for the death of former President Glafcos Clerides, the President took the initiative to invite Mr Eroglu to an informal meeting for the purpose of reaching an agreement on a common declaration that will open the way for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The President of the Republic yesterday sent a letter of invitation to Mr Eroglu in which he expresses his belief that “we are at a critical moment in the effort to give a decisive push to achieve a solution, at last, and that we need to redouble our efforts for the adoption of a common declaration at a first landmark meeting between the leaders of the two communities in the context of the good offices mission of the United Nations.”

We express our satisfaction at the acceptance of the invitation of the President of the Republic by Mr Eroglu. It has been arranged for the meeting to take place on Monday 25 November at 6:30 p.m. at the Chateau Status restaurant in the Ledra Palace area in Nicosia.
