Remarks by the Government Spokesman on the
meeting
of the President
of the Republic with the Turkish Cypriot leader and the UNSG
The results of the discussion that took place today
fully justify the need for this meeting to have taken place, the Government
Spokesman, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, said today with regard to the meeting of
the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, with the UN Secretary
General, Mr Ban Ki Moon, and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mr
Mustafa Akıncı, in Davos.
In his remarks to reporters, the Government Spokesman,
who is accompanying President Anastasiades in Davos, said that “the results of
the discussion and the dialogue that took place fully justify the need for this
meeting to take place”.
He added that “it is clear from the discussion that
followed that the UN Secretary General has now obviously a better picture of
what is really taking place at the negotiating table”.
Asked about the meeting between the President of the
Republic and the Vice President of the United States, Mr Joe Biden, which
preceded the meeting with the Secretary General and Mr Akıncı, the Government
Spokesman said that “it was an excellent meeting, during which the President
thanked the US Vice President for his support with regard to the Cyprus problem
over the years. A productive and cordial discussion took place. The US Vice
President reiterated the support of the USA, as well as the need for the
solution of the Cyprus problem to meet the expectations of the people of
Cyprus”.
Mr Christodoulides also noted that the discussion
between the President and the Vice President was not limited to the Cyprus
problem, adding that they also discussed issues relating to energy and security
in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
“Mr Biden praised the role of the Republic of Cyprus in the
particularly important region of the Eastern Mediterranean”, the Government
Spokesman said, adding that “on behalf of the President of the Republic, I wish
to publicly thank the US Vice President for his support to the Cyprus problem
over the years, for his full understanding with regard to the positions
expressed by the President and for his role in strengthening the relations
between the Republic of Cyprus and the United States of America”.
