The President of the Republic was awarded an Honorary
Doctorate
by the University of Renmin in Beijing
The President of the Republic, Mr Ni c os Anastasiades, was awarded, today, an Honorary Doctorate by the
University of Benmin in Beijing, during a special ceremony at the University
campus, in the presence of the members of the Cyprus delegation and the
Leadership of the University.
During a meeting he had earlier with the Rector of the University, Dr
Chen Yulu, and having first been hosted on a tour of the area of the Law School
of the University, the President of the Republic stated that the award of an
Honorary Doctorate to him “is a point of reference for the very good relations
between Cyprus and China and the relations between the people of the two
countries.
I express my warm thanks, but also thanks on behalf of the Cyprus
delegation and my country. I believe that the awarding of the Honorary Doctorate
is an expression of the friendly sentiments of the Chinese society and the
Government of the country toward the Republic of Cyprus.”
He added that during his tour there, he ascertained for himself the
admirable work done by the University and noted that “through the briefing I
had, it seems that the orientation of a great country that has a rich history
and civilization, is to give emphasis on the young people and in areas which, on
the basis of the modern state of affairs, emphasize the direction the country is
following. It is the University that develops properly oriented people,” he
said.
On his part, the Rector, after mentioning that the University of
Renmin is among the best three in the country and in particular, among other
areas, as far as the Department of Law, Humanities and Social Studies as well as
the Department of Mass Media, he expressed the opinion that today’s presence of
the President of the Republic at the University will attract students from China
to Cyprus.
He added that a total of 25 thousand students attend the University
and pointed out that the Law School of the University is considered to be the
best in the country.
During the meeting, gifts were exchanged. The Rector of the
University presented the President of the Republic with a painting by the
President of the School of Arts of the University, which depicts Chinese women
in traditional uniforms.
Subsequently, during a special ceremony, the President was awarded an
Honorary Doctorate.
