The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, met today with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Mr David Cameron, at 10 Downing Street, in London.
In his welcoming remarks, the Prime Minister, after welcoming President Anastasiades, said: “We have a very close relationship as member states of the European Union and the Commonwealth. There are many great defence issues that we share together and we work together to solve some of these EU issues right now.
But, I particularly want to welcome you and commend you for the really strong leadership you are providing to bring a solution to the Cyprus issue. I know how much effort you are putting into this, how much work you are giving, how much leadership you are providing. We would encourage you to do everything you can. I think it is a real opportunity, when there are so many unsolved problems in the world, if we can demonstrate that dialogue and good faith and good discussion can reach agreement that would be a great thing for Europe, a great thing for Cyprus and a great thing for the world.
So, I want to encourage you to do everything you can. We, as one of your oldest and best friends, we stand ready to help.”
For his part, President Anastasiades stated: “ Prime Minister, It is my pleasure to be here with you to discuss a lot of problems and common concerns like the Cyprus question, the EU reform and the humanitarian crisis we are facing today. I am sure that during our deliberations we shall share a common vision that peace is coming to Cyprus.
It is a longstanding problem, which is to the best interest of Europe and all quarters concerned, but as well as in the area, to be solved. If we shall manage to solve it, it can be a model for the whole a rea; how co-existence between Muslims, Christians and so on can work.
Moreover, the energy security is one of the things we will discuss today.”
