Remarks by the President of the Republic on the Cyprus problem

Certainly much will depend on the stance by the newly-elected President of Turkey, the President of the Republic, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, said today, referring to the efforts to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Speaking to the press in the village of Pedoulas, the President added that some information claimed or wanted to make Mr. Erdogan appear decided” but cautioned that this will become clear in due course.

“I hope that our strategic partners, but also our European friends and partners will become active so that we can have some specific results or initiatives. Therefore, the next two or three months will probably be the most crucial of the current phase (of the Cyprus problem).”

Asked whether he believes that during his presence at the UN General Assembly in September, the Turkish intentions will become clear, the President said that “during my presence there I believe that the various consultations and actions will show whether there is an intention on the part of the Turkish President to at last contribute in a substantive way so that the occupation is terminated and a permanent, lasting solution that is most appropriate for a European state will be found.”
