The President of
the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, participated in the deliberations of the 4th
EU-Africa Summit which took place in Brussels on 2-3 April.
The Summit
focused, inter alia, on peace and security issues, on issues of democratic
governance and human rights, growth, immigration as well as on issues
concerning climate charge and regional integration.
In his intervention,
during the discussion of peace and security issues, the President of the Republic
said that Europe remains the most important partner and donor for the African continent,
noting that political, economic, development and institutional cooperation surpasses
any other form of cooperation between the two parts at the international level.
Strengthening peace and security in Africa is completely interdependent to political
stability, prosperity and effective governance in the African continent, the President
pointed out.
President Anastasiades
also referred to the need to enhance maritime security, mostly through
combating piracy and illegal fishing. Cyprus, as a traditional maritime state,
attaches great importance to this area and is ready to contribute in its own
way towards the implementation of a single maritime strategy, he stressed.
