1. Eroglu: The Turkish Cypriot side does not
recognize the agreement signed between the Republic of Cyprus and Britain
According to
illegal Bayrak television (online, 27.01.14), Turkish Cypriot leader DervisEroglu saidthat the Turkish Cypriot side
does not recognize the agreement signed between the Republic of Cyprus and
Britain and expressed his view that Britain, as one of the guarantor powers in
Cyprus, should stop its biased behaviour and maintain its working by taking
both sides’ views into consideration.
During a meeting
with the self-styled mayor of occupied PergamosIlkerEdip and an accompanying
delegation, Eroglu claimed that normally all sides must be called to the table
before any agreement can be signed.
Eroglu explained
that he had held a meeting with the British High Commission the other day and
informed him that they could not accept any agreement which the Republic of
Turkey has no prior knowledge of.
2. Self-styled mfa claimed that the agreement
between Britain and the Republic of Cyprus on the British Bases violates the
1960 agreements
Turkish Cypriot
daily Kibris (28.01.14) reports that the breakaway regime's self-styled
ministry of foreign affairs in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus
claimed that while the Turkish Cypriot side is in the middle of ongoing efforts
and initiatives aimed a resuming Cyprus reunification talks, the agreement between
Britain and officials of the “Greek Cypriot administration” (Translator’s note:
referring to the government of the Republic of Cyprus) on the British Bases
area is a far removed from the principle of justice and that alteration of the
status in the British area in favour of the Greek Cypriots cannot be approved.
In a written
statement issued by the self-styled ministry of foreign affairs, it is alleged
that the Turkish Cypriot side would not remain as a bystanderto this
development, which contravenes international agreements related to Cyprus,
adding that initiatives and appropriate consultations have begun to overturn this
fait accompli.
According to the
written statement, it is indisputably clear that the British Sovereign Base
Areas in Cyprus belong to an indivisiblepackage of provisions concerning the
Sovereign Base Areas set out in the Treaty of Establishment of the Republic of
Cyprus in 1960. For this reason, the written statement claims that any change
regarding the British Sovereign Base Areas without the briefing and approval of
all involved sides in the 1960 Treaty as Turkey, Greece, Britain, the Turkish Cypriot
andthe Greek Cypriot sides is a violation against the 1960 agreements and the
Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties of 1969.

find a decisive and final solution on this issue. He added that they can
contribute on the Cyprus problem, because they can talk with both sides.
Meanwhile,
Turkish daily Today’s Zaman (online, 27.01.14) reported that President Hollande,
on the first presidential visit to Turkey in 22 years, said on Monday that his
country, which still blocks accession talks on four chapters, backed the continuation of Turkey's
European Union membership process with the opening of talks on new chapters.
“Accession
negotiations should continue on the basis of transparency and respect.
Negotiations do not entail membership; the
issue of membership will be decided upon at a referendum. But this should
not stop us from proceeding with talks chapter by chapter,” Hollande said at a
joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gul, at the
presidential palace.
Gul said EU
membership was a “strategic goal” for Turkey but underlined that Ankara does
not want to see any more obstacles being raised in Europe on its path towards
accession. “We hope everyone will honour their promises,” he said.
Hollande avoided
spelling any possible date for Turkish accession, saying it was not even
brought up during his talks with Gul, and left a question on whether Paris
plans to lift its blockade on four of the 35 chapters unanswered. But he
insisted that the accession process must proceed, noting that the continuation
of the process will also help Turkey deal with issues of allocation of powers
and the independence of the judiciary.
