Remarks by the President of the Republic on the Cyprus problem

Speaking at an event today, at the Presidential Palace, the President of the Republic, MrNicosAnastasiades, said, on the Cyprus problem, that 39 years later no one underestimates the risks; however the other side cannot expect us to succumb to their intransigent claims.

He further added that he regrets to say that, unfortunately, the Turkish intransigence does not lead to the desired outcome, namely the resumption the soonest possible of the talks which will enable us to get rid of the occupation troops, to free and reunite the country and live together in peace.

The President of the Republic also stressed that during this period significant and brave efforts have been made so as to safeguard the basic principles of the solution, not overlooking, at the same time, the concerns of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots.

We will insist on safeguarding the basic principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem, prior to the resumption of any talks, not according to our wishes, but according to the provisions of the decisions and resolutions of the UN Security Council, which leave no doubt that the united Republic of Cyprus should have a single international personality, a single sovereignty and a single citizenship, he said. The ones who deny it are the ones who wish for the creation of two states or for the creation of a confederation through, supposedly, two preexisting sovereign states, the President added.

MrAnastasiades also stated: “Illegality does not create justice and it cannot be accepted by us. Whoever truly wants to help, whoever has shown interest in the resumption of the dialogue has no other choice but to turn to the Turkish side, either this is called the Government in Ankara or the Turkish Cypriot leadership.

We will not accept the recognition of any fait accompli whatsoever, and the next few days will be crucial as to determining our stance, which will be the result of their behaviour and stance. Unfortunately, the indications so far are not encouraging.”

Lastly, the President of the Republic said that, following his return from Egypt, where he will pay an official visit with a view to signing important agreements, a National Council meeting will be held to determine the future course.
