Written statement by the Government Spokesman, Mr Christos Stylianides

Today, marks 30 years since the illegal declaration of the pseudostate in the sovereign territory of the Republic of Cyprus that has been under military occupation by Turkey since 1974. That declaration is the culmination of the secessionist actions by Ankara, but also of the effort for the legitimization of the faits accomplis of Turkey’s 1974 military invasion and occupation.

The President of the Republic and the Government condemn the illegal secessionist act and reiterate their determination to continue to work for the solution of the Cyprus problem, for the reunification of our homeland and our people, in the context of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, for one state with one and single sovereignty, one citizenship, one international personality. For a solution that will safeguard the human rights and the basic freedoms of all the people of Cyprus.

The status of Cyprus as a memberstate of the European Union is the guarantee for a comprehensive and mutually acceptable solution.

The international community respects the sovereignty, the independence and the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and affirms, through a series of resolutions by the Security Council of the United Nations, that the declaration of the pseudostate is legally invalid.

We call on Turkey to reconsider its positions and respect the decisions and the resolutions of the Security Council of the UN, and to contribute toward the reunification of Cyprus and its people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
