At the invitation of the
Republic of Cyprus, the Panel of Experts on Iran, established pursuant to Security
Council Resolution 1929 (2010),
and operating under the direction of the Security Council Sanctions Committee, established pursuant to
Security Council Resolution 1737 (2006), paid a
two-day working visit to Cyprus on 25-26 November 2013.
The Panel has been assigned
to assist the aforementioned Sanctions Committee in carrying out its mandate,
which includes monitoring and improving the
implementation of sanctions imposed by Security Council Resolutions 1737
(2006), 1747 (2007), 1803 (2008) and 1929 (2010) relating to the Islamic
Republic of Iran.
The Panel held informative
meetings and thorough discussions with officials from government Departments,
Ministries and Authorities with responsibility for enacting legislation or
regulations relevant to the measures on the Islamic Republic of Iran, and for
actual implementation of sanctions. The Panel also had the opportunity to meet
with relevant representatives of the private sector. The consultations, chaired
by the Political Director, were conducted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which
undertook the responsibility for organising and coordinating the visit.
During
the consultations the Panel was duly informed of the procedures in place and
the ways by which the Republic of Cyprus enforces the UN sanctions against Iran.
Views were exchanged on the trends and “best practices” regarding the effective
implementation of sanctions based on the Panel’s accumulated experience from its
relevant visits to other UN Member States.
