German
Foreign Minister welcomes resumption of Cyprus talks
Germany’s
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, issued a statement
yesterday welcoming the resumption of the talks for a settlement of the Cyprus problem
and noting that this development indicates that it is possible to overcome the
division.
Foreign
Minister Steinmeier’s full statement reads as follows:
“I very much welcome the resumption of talks
in Cyprus. This step that Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and newly
elected Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have agreed on awakens fresh
hope, indicating that it is possible to overcome the division.
Both sides would benefit considerably from reunification, as no-one is content with the status quo. Resolving the Cyprus conflict would have positive consequences for the entire south-eastern Mediterranean region. Together with our partners in Europe and around the world, we appeal to both sides to make use of the current momentum to find comprehensive agreement.

Our particular gratitude goes to Espen Barth Eide, the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General, for his tireless efforts in pursuit of a mutually acceptable solution. Germany will continue to actively advocate the settlement of this conflict in close liaison with our partners.”
