Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Ukraine

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Ukraine

We are deeply concerned with the recent violent escalation of events in Ukraine.

We join the call of condemning all sorts of violence, including the surge of extremists’ factions that regretfully culminated to the loss of lives.  We express our sincere condolences to their families.

As clearly stated in all EU common messages what is imperative is the restoration of stability. This is of utmost importance.

Cyprus fully supports an effective EU response to the exponential deterioration of the situation, in a way that will alleviate conditions on the ground and revive an active political dialogue between legitimate stakeholders.

We share the view that assisting   the democratic process should be country- led and respect the prerogative rights and choices of the Ukrainian people.

We concur that the way forward should aim at decisively facilitating the political process which will diffuse tensions and lead to the normalization of the situation, to the benefit of the people of Ukraine.

Ukraine is a partner of key importance for the EU and the resolution of turmoil in a viable manner, and in coordination with all international actors, is not only a matter of primary importance to all of us but also a matter of responsibility.
