The Statistical Service announces
the publication of the annual report «Transport Statistics» for the year 2012. The
report provides detailed information on the economic developments of the broad
Transport sector as well as data on the registration of motor vehicles by type
and category, road accidents, shipping and aviation activities and
transportation of goods and passengers.
The main developments which occurred
were as follows:
(a) The broad Transport sector
registered in 2011 a decrease of 3,8% on the gross output at current prices and
amounted to €1.773,9 mn in 2011, compared to €1.844,8 mn in 2010. The value added of the sector
decreased to €843,1 mn in 2011, from €877,3 mn in 2010 and its share of Gross Value Added was 5,2% at current market
prices.
(b) Motor vehicles newly registered
during 2012 decreased by 28,8% to 25.829 from 36.264 in 2011. Private saloon cars newly registered
decreased by 26,3% to 19.420 from 26.409 in 2011. Vehicles of all types and categories on the
Register of the Land Transport Department, at the end of 2012, totaled 769.249,
compared to 771.861 at the end of 2011.
(c) The number of road accidents
reported to the police dropped to 1.492 in 2012 compared to 1.690 in 2011. Human casualties in road accidents were 51
persons killed and 1.381 persons injured in 2012, as against 71 dead and 1.553
injured in 2011.
(d) During 2012, 3.034 vessels arrived
at the various ports of Cyprus compared to 3.319 in 2011. Of these 2.168 or 71,5% arrived at Lemesos
port, 631 or 20,8% called at Larnaka port and 235 ships at other ports.
At the end of 2012,
there were 1.818 ships on the Cyprus Register with a total of 21.565.917 gross
registered tonnage, as against 1.840 ships in 2011, with a total of 22.287.344
gross registered tonnage.
(e) Civil aircraft landings during 2012 decreased
to 30.141 compared to 30.864 in 2011.
Passenger arrivals through airports increased to 3.828.379 in 2012,
compared to 3.796.768 in 2011.
