Written statement by the Government Spokesman, Mr Christos Stylianides, with regard to remarks by D. Eroglu

The intention of our side is not to enter into a blame game situation, and that is why we will not comment on Mr Eroglu’s remarks and leave that to the judgment of every impartial observer.

For the Greek Cypriot side everything is established at the level of action and decisions. The President of the Republic has repeatedly made clear that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to enter into substantive negotiations, at the earliest possible, with the aim to achieve a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem. Toward achieving that goal, there are consultations taking place that aim at the adoption of a Joint Declaration which will include the basic principles of a solution to the Cyprus problem as these are recorded in the relevant UN resolutions.

The President of the Republic has, at the same time, emphasized that the Joint Declaration should state, with absolute clarity, these basic principles which will be, from the outset, the safety valve and the guarantee that the negotiations will have a positive prospect toward a conclusion.

The Greek Cypriot side entered this consultation with sincere political will and constructive approach, and will continue the effort with the same disposition. It expects from the Turkish Cypriot side to show the same political will.

At the same time, the President of the Republic, demonstrating his clear desire for a solution at the earliest possible, has proposed a realistic and realizable set of measures that are clearly intended to create a climate of trust and a new momentum with regard to the Cyprus problem.
