Bilateral consultations between Cyprus
and Egypt were held on Tuesday, 12th of November, in Cairo, followed
by the first round of tripartite political consultations between the Ministries
of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt. The meetings took place as
decided by the Foreign Ministers of the three countries at their recent meeting
in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last September.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the
Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Tasos Tzionis, headed the delegation of Cyprus.
Greece was represented by the Political Director of the Greek Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dimitris Paraskevopoulos. The Egyptian delegation
was headed by the Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs, Ambassador
Haitem Seif El Nasr.
The three sides agreed to continue the dialogue on regional policies and strengthen coordination and cooperation at all levels on matters of common interest and in promoting peace and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Proposals for joint development and
cooperation programmes were also discussed. As it was agreed, the next round of
tripartite consultations will take place in the first half of 2014 in Athens.
Earlier in the day, a bilateral meeting between the delegations of Cyprus and Egypt had taken place. During the consultations the two parties decided to intensify coordination between the Foreign Ministries and all government departments of the two states in international organizations and conferences, including the EU, the Union for the Mediterranean, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Furthermore, the two delegations
discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation on issues of mutual interest,
including energy affairs, maritime policy, environmental protection, tourism,
education, culture, shipping, agriculture, business and investment.
