Written statement by the Government Spokesman
Mr Nikos Christodoulides on EuropeDay
On the occasion of Europe Day, marked today, the Republic of Cyprus
joins its voice with the entire European family in celebrating the vision for
European integration.
Europe celebrates today the Schuman Declaration, on 9 May 1950,
whichconstitutes the foundation of the structure of the European Union, a
structure that is our common home.
The fundamental principle of equality and mutual respect among the EU member states safeguards the effective role of all the member states in the European undertakings, with the Republic of Cyprus, as a full member state, contributing in the efforts for European integration and for the promotion of the objectives of the EU in regional and international issues.
The fundamental principle of equality and mutual respect among the EU member states safeguards the effective role of all the member states in the European undertakings, with the Republic of Cyprus, as a full member state, contributing in the efforts for European integration and for the promotion of the objectives of the EU in regional and international issues.
Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004 and historically an integral
part of Europe, continues to be an open wound in the European structure,
experiencing for 42 years now the tragic consequences of division and military
occupation. A solution to the Cyprus problem which will be fullyconsistent with
the European acquis and the fundamental principles and values, on which the EU
is based, will safeguard its viability and functionality.
To this end, the more active and decisive role that the EU has undertaken in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem constitutes a safety valve in a reunified Cyprus for the safeguarding of the human rights and the basic freedoms of all the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
