1. Cavusoglu: The guarantees will be discussed at a five-party conference; He met with Akinci, Yorgancioglu and Siber
Under the title “Solution this year”, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (27.05.15) reports that Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, who held yesterday an illegal one-day-visit to the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus, has argued that a lasting solution and peace could be reached this year in Cyprus, if both sides are determined. Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in the occupied part of Nicosia, Cavusoglu expressed their satisfaction with the resumption of the negotiations and the decision of the leaders to meet at least twice a month.

Akinci on his part said that they had the opportunity to evaluate the situation in the Cyprus problem and drew attention to what he described as “Turkey’s support” to the negotiations process. “I sincerely believe that after the non-solution which lasted for years in Cyprus, the time has come to enter into a new period which will be protecting the legitimate rights and interests of both sides and allow our community to live in equality and security”, he said.

Moreover, Cavusoglu noted that everybody understands the opportunities which could be offered by a lasting and just solution, adding that the solution in Cyprus will bring benefits to everyone and Cyprus will become an island of peace, development and prosperity. Cavusoglu alleged that Turkey’s determination on this issue continues the same since 2004 and added that Turkey will continue to support the “TRNC” in the field of economy and in all other fields.

Cavusoglu argued that they want the negotiations to continue in an effective manner within the framework of the joint statement of 11 February and the convergences achieved until today.

Replying to a question on the issue of guarantees, Cavusoglu said that this issue will be discussed at a five-party conference after a road map that will come up and alleged that discussing the issue today is not useful.

Responding to another question, he said that there is no problem in the “TRNC’s” observer status at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and added that this status is preserved.

Meanwhile, Cuvusoglu met also with the self-styled speaker of the “assembly”, Sibel Siber and so-called prime minister Ozkan Yorgancioglu.

During their meeting, Siber argued that all they want and expect is a solution in Cyprus and for the Turkish Cypriots to take the place they deserve in the international field.

Cavusoglu said that the course of the negotiations is very positive and added that they wanted to visit the “TRNC” during such a period and reiterate their support to the negotiating process and the Turkish Cypriot “people”. He noted that he will visit Kuwait to participate in the meetings of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and Cyprus will be on their agenda there.

During his meeting with Yorgancioglu, Cavusoglu reiterated that they want a solution based on bi-zonality and equality within the framework of the joint declaration of 11 February. He also expressed the hope that what he called as the “water of peace” [Translator’s note: The water which will be brought from Turkey to the occupied area of Cyprus through undersea pipelines] will come to the occupied area of Cyprus on 20 July, recalling earlier statements saying that this water could also be given to the Greek Cypriots and wished for this to be in the benefit of “both peoples on the island”.

Yorgancioglu, on his part, said that after a solution based on the 11 February declaration, the Turkish Cypriot “people” will take the place they deserve as a part of the international law and expressed the belief that this is a good solution for the Turkish Cypriot “people”, for the Greek Cypriots, for the other peoples of the area, for Turkey and for Greece.

2. Erdogan: We will never give up our rights as a guarantor country
According to Turkish private channel NTV, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated that Turkey will never abandon its rights as Cyprus’ guarantor country.

In a live broadcast on NTV (26.05.15), Erdogan answered Oguz Haksever’s questions on a variety of subjects including the presidential system, the June 7 elections, the Solution Process and the Cyprus issue.
Referring to the Cyprus talks, Erdogan said that current relationship between Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades can be a prelude to a settlement on the island and added: “We discussed partially this issue when Mr Mustafa [Akinci] visited Turkey. We wish that this will continue on the path towards a solution. We talked this throughout. If a positive outcome comes out from these negotiations, the Cyprus problem will no longer be a problem and both North and South Cyprus will take a step with an essential structure of two founding states. However, we will never be able to abandon our rights as a guarantor country.”
Responding to a question as to whether the talks had started on a positive note and whether the negotiations could progress this time, Erdogan said: “Mr Anastasiades had first rejected the 12th point in the 11th of February Joint Declaration but then took a step back. This was extremely important because the UN Secretary General was looking at the process positively at the time. He is still looking at the process within that framework”.
Replying to a question on the guarantees and that an atmosphere is being created whereby the EU could be seen as a guarantor, Erdogan said: “This is not a fair approach, and it is not possible to be accepted. How can we rely on its justice when the EU did not even keep its own promises? Besides, it does not have the right. The right of guarantor belongs to three countries here, Britain, Greece and Turkey. The EU itself did not recognize some rights of the North Cyprus on the financial issues. For example, even in the meetings we held in Switzerland, at that time Verheugen attended these meetings on behalf of the EU, the EU could not give the necessary support even at the outcome of those meetings.” Erdogan referred also to the Annan plan referenda and added: “We cannot forget these realities”.

According to Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis (27.05.15), the “TRNC higher education workshop” started yesterday in the occupied part of Nicosia with the cooperation of the “higher education planning, evaluation, accreditation and coordination council (YODAK)” and the “national education ministry”.

6. Elcil accuses Siber of trespassing the building of the regime’s “assembly”
Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Bakis newspaper (27.05.15) reports that Sener Elcil, general secretary of the Turkish Cypriot teachers’ trade union (KTOS), has said that a month ago a complaint had been filed to the “police” against some members of their trade union who were accused of trespassing the building of the “assembly”, in which they entered after securing permission to submit to the “deputies” their views on a “law” which they describe as “migration law”.

Elcil noted that the complaint was filed by the “speaker” of the “assembly” Sibel Siber after Zorlu Tore, self-styled deputy with the National Unity Party (UBP) expressed his annoyance about this action. Siber, added Elcil, made sure that the “police” filed “a lawsuit” against the unionists.

He recalled that the building of the “assembly” was a cigarette factory before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and belongs to Greek Cypriot Dianellos family. Elcil said that he met with the son of late Dianellos, who told them that he will give them a letter certified by a notary that will allow them to enter into the building. Pointing out that they will submit this document to the “court” during their trial in the occupied area of Cyprus, Elcil said that those, who trespassed this property, are not the teachers, but Siber herself.

Elcil added: “The esteemed court of the TRNC can punish us as it wishes. We have absolutely no problem. We will carry this to international courts and we have a certified document from the owner of the building saying that we can enter into this building”.

7.Akansoy: “The Turkish Cypriots are not ready for an early peace”
Under the above title, Turkish Cypriot daily Haberal Kibrisli newspaper (27.05.15) reports on statements by Asim Akansoy, “deputy” with the Republican Turkish Party-United Forces (CTP-BG) in occupied Famagusta.
Speaking during a televised program broadcast yesterday in the occupied area of Cyprus, Akansoy, stated, inter alia, that the Turkish Cypriots are not ready for an early solution and stressed the need for not doing something in a hurry for the peace and the solution.
Stating that it is not possible for peace to exist only with two signatures, Akansoy said that he does not consider it necessary to say that solution should be found by the end of the year. “There is not a tendency for peace, either in the north or in the south. If we pass to a new stage and a new state, we should minimalize the potential risks in both sides. No matter what is written at the moment, we are not in this position now. The Turkish Cypriots are not ready for a quick solution. If Akinci follows the same path, then the end of the path is clear”, Akansoy added.
Evaluating the recent statement made by President Nicos Anastasiades that we have no need of the guarantor countries in Cyprus, Akansoy said that the guarantees will continue in Cyprus until a guarantee is provided to the Turkish Cypriot “people”.
Underlining that the Turkish Cypriots should not experience the same incidents they lived in the past, Akansoy said that peace is possible to be achieved with confidence and trust and added that it is very important for both sides to trust each other.
