following a
conference on the Cyprus
In his remarks to reporters
following a conference on the Cyprus problem that took place today at the
presidential residence in Troodos mountains, in which, among others,
participated the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Government Spokesman and the
interlocutor of the Greek Cypriot side, the President of the Republic, Mr Nikos
Anastasiades, said that “the conference concerned – on the basis of the
proposals that have been submitted – the further handling of the national
issue.
The conference is related to my
meeting on 2 September with the Turkish Cypriot leader, but also to the overall
effort to find an orthodox way to address the dialogue that is underway. We
proceed with the proposed methodology and in that direction there will take
place a series of meetings, next week, both with the team of the interlocutor as
well as with the leaders of the political parties, in order for them to be
briefed on an important project that is being done by the interlocutor’s team
and so that we can have the reaction of the party leaders at a follow-up
conference certainly before 2 September. In other words, there will be two
conferences with the political party leaders: one for briefing on and handing of
the project that the interlocutor’s team will complete, and the second for the
views of the parties to be heard, once they have been briefed.
This does not mean that there will
be a cancellation of the three-day conference of the National Council for an
in-depth discussion of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the current situation
and in response to the request by the parties.
The three-day conference of the
National Council will take place before my departure for the United Nations and
I want to believe that through the initiatives that are being undertaken, in
other words the good preparation by the Greek Cypriot side, there will be a
broader consensus among the political forces with regard to the handling of the
national issue.”
