Industrial production down by 0.3% in euro area
Down by 0.2% in EU28



In March 2014 compared with February 2014, seasonally adjusted industrial production1 fell by 0.3% in the euro area2 (EA18) and by 0.2% in the EU282, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In February 20143 industrial production rose by 0.2% and 0.3% respectively.
In March 2014 compared with March 20134, industrial production dropped by 0.1% in the euro area and increased by 0.5% in the EU28.


Monthly comparison by main industrial grouping and by Member State
The decrease of 0.3% in industrial production in the euro area in March 2014, compared with February 2014, is due to production of intermediate goods falling by 0.8%, non-durable consumer goods by 0.5%, energy by 0.4% and capital goods by 0.3%, while durable consumer goods remained stable.
In the EU28, the decrease of 0.2% is due to production of energy falling by 0.6%, intermediate goods by 0.5%, durable consumer goods by 0.4%, capital goods by 0.2% and non-durable consumer goods by 0.1%.
The largest decreases in industrial production were registered in Portugal (-4.8%), Lithuania (-3.7%), Sweden
(-2.5%) and
Greece (-1.9%), and the highest increases in Ireland (+5.6%), Denmark (+3.1%) and Slovenia (+2.0%).


Annual comparison by main industrial grouping and by Member State
The decrease of 0.1% in industrial production in the euro area in March 2014, compared with March 2013, is due to production of energy falling by 11.9% and durable consumer goods by 0.9%, while non-durable consumer goods rose by 1.3%, intermediate goods by 2.2% and capital goods by 2.6%.
In the EU28, the increase of 0.5% is due to production of intermediate goods and capital goods both rising by 3.0% and non-durable consumer goods by 1.8%, while durable consumer goods fell by 0.3% and energy by 10.5%.
The largest decreases in industrial production were registered in the Netherlands (-12.5%), Lithuania (-10.2%) and Finland (-5.4%), and the highest increases in Luxembourg (+13.5%), Romania (+9.6%) and Hungary (+8.1%).


  1. The index of industrial production measures the evolution of the volume of production for industry excluding construction, based on data adjusted for working day and seasonal effects. Seasonally adjusted euro area and EU series are calculated by aggregating the seasonally adjusted national data. Eurostat carries out the seasonal adjustment of the data for those countries that do not adjust their data for seasonal effects. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU.

  1. Data of previous months have been revised compared to those issued in the News Release 58/2014 of 14 April 2014. The monthly growth rate for February 2014 remained stable at +0.2% for the EA18 and has been revised from +0.4% to +0.3% for the EU28. The annual growth rate remained stable at +1.7% for the EA18 and has been revised from +2.1% to +2.2% for the EU28.
