Visit to Cyprus of Danish Peacekeepers – UNFICYP 50 th Anniversary

30.04.2014, 15:00 at Ledra Pallas

Danish peacekeepers who took part in the first UNFICYP mission to Cyprus will arrive in Nicosia tomorrow.  The veteran peacekeepers will revisit the buffer zone and lay a commemorative plaque at a ceremony at Ledra Pallas.

Denmark was part of the first group of countries to send peacekeepers to Cyprus. The first Danish soldiers of the UNFICYP Danish Contingent (DANCON) arrived in Cyprus in May 1964. Since then 22 .623 Danish peacekeepers served in Cyprus until their departure in 1996. 25 lost their life while serving in Cyprus.

An honorary plaque will be unveiled to commemorate 32 years of service. The ceremony will take place in the presence of the Danish Ambassador Casper Klynge on Wednesday 30 June, 1500, at Ledra Pallas, the first headquarters of the Danish mission.
