Remarks by the
President of the Republic following
his meeting
with the leader of the
Turkish Cypriot community
The inconsistency of
Turkish Cypriot proposals with the joint communiqué was pointed out
by our side at the meeting with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot
community, the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, said
today.
In his remarks to
reporters at the Presidential Palace, following his return from the
Nicosia airport where he had a meeting with the leader of the Turkish
Cypriot community, Mr Dervish Eroglu, which lasted for two hours and
forty five minutes, the President said, in response to a question,
that during the meeting “there was a review of the progress or lack
of progress until today on the basis of the positions that were
submitted by the two sides. It appears that there is a need for
further dialogue with regard to all the issues that relate to the
Cyprus problem.
The differences that
exist until today were ascertained. Also ascertained or pointed out,
on the part of our side, was the inconsistency of Turkish Cypriot
proposals in relation to the joint communiqué.
Certain positions or
views were expressed by the other side about the worries or concerns
of the Turkish Cypriots, and what has been agreed is that this
dialogue should be completed at the earliest possible, at least with
respect to the initial positions of the sides, and then there will be
of course a second phase where a more detailed discussion will start
taking place of everything that has been submitted until today.”
